Bees and pollination
All around the world, bee populations are collapsing. The main drivers behind this well documented phenomenon are the spreading of global bee epidemics like Varroa mite as well as the increasing fragmentation of natural habitats and loss of flowering plants caused mainly by intensified agricultural production. The United Nations Environment Programme report “Global Honey Bee Colony Disorder and Other Threats to Insect Pollinators” (UNEP, 2010) documents this problem. If we do not act now and take effective measures to protect bees and other pollinators, the livelihood of future generations on this planet is at great risk!
